Understanding Fuel Cost Calculation
What is a Fuel Cost Calculator?
A fuel cost calculatoris a tool that estimates the total cost of fuel for a given trip based on three inputs: the trip distance, the vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price at the pump. The core formula is simple: Fuel Needed = Distance ÷ Efficiency, and Total Cost = Fuel Needed × Price per Unit. Our fuel cost calculator handles all common unit systems — kilometres and miles for distance, litres and US/UK gallons for volume, and L/100km, km/L, MPG (US), and MPG (UK) for efficiency — so you can calculate fuel costs accurately regardless of your country or vehicle type.
How Our Fuel Cost Calculator Works
- 1. Enter Your Trip Details: Input the trip distance in kilometres or miles, your vehicle's fuel efficiency in your preferred unit (L/100km, km/L, MPG US, or MPG UK), and the current fuel price per litre or gallon. All processing happens locally in your browser — your data never leaves your device.
- 2. Instant Browser-Based Calculation: Click "Calculate Fuel Cost" and the tool converts all inputs to a common unit system, computes the fuel needed, multiplies by the price per litre, and displays the total cost along with cost per km, cost per mile, and CO₂ estimate.
- 3. Review Results and Multi-Trip Table: View the total cost, fuel needed, and distance in both metric and imperial units. The multi-trip table shows costs for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 trips so you can instantly see weekly or monthly fuel expenses.
What the Fuel Cost Calculator Computes
- Total Fuel Cost: The main result — total money spent on fuel for the trip, in your chosen currency. Calculated as (distance ÷ efficiency) × price per litre, with all unit conversions handled automatically.
- Fuel Needed: The volume of fuel required for the trip, shown in your selected unit (litres, US gallons, or UK gallons) and also in litres for reference.
- Cost per km / Cost per mile: The fuel cost per unit of distance, useful for comparing routes, vehicles, or driving styles. Both metric and imperial values are shown simultaneously.
- CO₂ Emissions Estimate: An approximate CO₂ figure based on 2.31 kg of CO₂ per litre of petrol/gasoline burned. This is a standard average — diesel produces slightly more (2.68 kg/L) and LPG slightly less.
Fuel Efficiency Units Explained
Different countries use different conventions for expressing fuel efficiency. L/100km (litres per 100 kilometres) is used in most of Europe, Australia, and Canada — lower is better. km/L (kilometres per litre) is common in Japan, India, and parts of Asia — higher is better. MPG (US) (miles per US gallon) is used in the United States, where one US gallon = 3.785 litres. MPG (UK) (miles per Imperial gallon) is used in the United Kingdom, where one Imperial gallon = 4.546 litres — so UK MPG figures are always higher than US MPG for the same vehicle. Our fuel cost calculator converts all of these to a common internal unit before computing the result.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fuel Cost Calculator
A fuel cost calculator is a tool that estimates the total cost of fuel for a trip based on the distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price. Our fuel cost calculator supports kilometres and miles, litres and gallons, and all common efficiency formats — running entirely in your browser with no signup required.
Enter your trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency (in L/100km, km/L, MPG US, or MPG UK), and the current fuel price per litre or gallon. Click "Calculate Fuel Cost" and the tool instantly shows the total cost, fuel needed, cost per km, and a multi-trip cost table.
MPG US uses the US gallon (3.785 litres) while MPG UK uses the Imperial gallon (4.546 litres). A vehicle rated at 40 MPG UK is equivalent to about 33 MPG US. Our fuel cost calculator handles both automatically — just select the correct unit for your region.
To convert L/100km to MPG US, divide 235.21 by the L/100km value. For MPG UK, divide 282.48 by the L/100km value. For example, 8 L/100km ≈ 29.4 MPG US or 35.3 MPG UK. Our fuel cost calculator accepts all four efficiency formats so you never need to convert manually.
The CO₂ estimate uses 2.31 kg per litre, which is the standard average for petrol/gasoline combustion. Diesel produces approximately 2.68 kg/L and LPG approximately 1.63 kg/L. The estimate is a reasonable approximation for planning purposes but will vary slightly based on fuel blend and driving conditions.
Yes. The currency symbol field accepts any character — type $, €, £, ₹, ¥, or any other symbol. The calculator uses the symbol for display only and does not perform currency conversion, so enter your fuel price in your local currency and the result will be in the same currency.
Manufacturer ratings are measured under controlled test conditions and are typically 10–30% better than real-world consumption. For accurate fuel cost estimates, use your vehicle's actual consumption from your trip computer or by dividing litres filled by kilometres driven on your last fill-up.
Yes, completely. All fuel cost calculations happen locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your trip details, fuel prices, and results are never sent to any server. Your data never leaves your device, ensuring 100% privacy.
Yes. Our fuel cost calculator is 100% free with no signup, no account, and no usage limits. Calculate fuel costs for as many trips as you need — with multi-trip tables and CO₂ estimates — at no cost, forever.
