While it is usually measured in years, months, and days, a precise calculation must account for the irregularities of our calendar system, including varying month lengths and leap years.
How the Calendar Calculations Work
To determine the exact chronological difference between two dates, our calculator applies calendar math. Simply dividing the total milliseconds by a fixed number of days per year would introduce inaccuracies because:
- Varying Month Lengths: Months contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. When subtracting dates, if the reference day of the month is less than the birth day of the month, the calculation borrows days from the preceding month, using its exact number of days.
- Leap Years: A leap year occurs every four years, adding February 29th to the calendar. For individuals born on February 29th, the calculator automatically shifts their birthday to March 1st in non-leap years, matching standard legal definitions.
- Exact Time of Day: If you specify a time of birth, the calculator determines your age down to the exact hour, minute, and second. If the current time is before your birth hour on your birthday, you are technically considered a day younger until that hour is reached.
Western vs. Chinese Zodiac Boundaries
